Brotherhood at Beth Tikvah

My name is Jeffrey Wasserstrom and I am looking forward to my second year as the Brotherhood President. I have been a member of Beth Tikvah since marrying my wife, Cheryl, over 10 years ago. We’ve had two Bat Mitzvah’s (Rachel and Sarah Kent) and have a Bar Mitzvah (Jason Wasserstrom) coming in approx. 4 years. My experience at Beth Tikvah has been greatly enhanced since I became active in the Brotherhood as a result of getting to know many more fellow members.

Meanwhile, it’s a very exciting time for Brotherhood, as in just 4 years we have already grown to a membership of 79. Our success can be attributed to fulfilling our objective of helping the men of the congregation engage in a number of fun activities and get better acquainted with each other.

We continue to try and offer a wide variety of events so that everyone can find something that interests them – and we usually add food or a meal to the event. Some of our signature events each year include our Paid-Up Membership Dinner highlighted by a speaker, Scioto Downs Race Night, Funny Bone Comedy Night, Game Night, and our Annual Dinner and Installation also featuring an interesting speaker.

We also take great pride in hosting the Café Tikvah every Sunday, leading Shabbat services with Sisterhood, volunteering for Meals on Wheels, constructing the Temple Sukkah, and organizing The Columbus Chicken Soup “Souper Bowl” Cook-off to raise funds for our summer camp scholarship fund.

From the May 2008 Tikvah Topics:

• The month of May gets off to a quick start as we will cheer our Columbus Destroyers on to victory over the Dallas Desperados on May 3 in exciting arena football action. The evening will begin at Buca Di Beppo for dinner at 5:15 PM,
followed by the Game at 7:00 PM.

• Plan on coming out to Café Tikvah on Sunday, May 4, for the final “Big Breakfast” of the year – your last chance to enjoy the great buffet cooked up by our own Brotherhood members. And, as always, thanks to the Breakfast Gang for all of their work.

• On Wednesday, May 14, we will hold our Annual Dinner and Installation of the New Board at Damon’s, 3799 Park Mill Run Dr., Hilliard, Ohio. The evening will begin at 6:00 PM, with dinner at 6:30 PM followed by our guest speaker and a short meeting. Come and meet the new board. RSVP by May 7 to David Binkovitz. For those interested, we still have openings to chair the Fundraising, Temple Service and Membership committees.

• The following Wednesday, May 21, Brotherhood members will gather for dinner at the third Wednesday of the month “Brotherhood Night Out.” Please contact Rick Kleban or David Binkovitz for more details on this month’s location. This has become a favorite event in a short time, so plan on joining us for dinner and kibitzing.

• In looking ahead to the summer, we have a Columbus Clippers game planned for Saturday evening, June 28, vs. Indianapolis. The game begins at 7:05 PM. The first 50 who RSVP will receive free tickets to the game courtesy of our own Bob Lewis. We are also looking into a picnic and concert.

• Finally, thanks to everyone’s support at Chicken Souper Bowl Cook-off II, the
Brotherhood is helping to send 11 kids to four different Jewish summer camps this year. In addition to funds raised from the Chicken Souper Bowl Cook-off, please consider making donations to the Jewish Camp Fund throughout the year. We hope to be able to donate more money and help send more kids to Jewish summer camps next year.
